    The Houston Community College Board of Trustees elected officers in a meeting held Wednesday, January 18, 2023. The governing board named Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary (District 7) board chair,Trustee Monica Richart (District 1) vice-chair, and Trustee Eva Loredo (District 8) secretary. Each were affirmed by acclamation.

    JPMorgan Chase commits $3.3 million for disaster resilience and workforce collaborative led by Houston Community College Combined Shape Created with Sketch.

    A new workforce collaborative uniting 17 local community partners to offer resiliency career training will receive part of a $3.3 million investment from JPMorgan Chase. Local community partners will receive $1.8 million of the total investment and remaining dollars will support various climate and sustainability initiatives in Houston.

    The pain of losing her youngest son, Chase Simon, to gun violence on a Third Ward street four years ago hasn’t eased at all for HCC English professor Syble Davis. But this year, like the last three, Davis is again putting her sorrow into action. She is continuing the Drive-By Toy Drive she and her family began in 2019 to honor her son, and to help bring joy and happiness to deserving children in the Third Ward area.

    Kanisha Ffriend, a Houston Community College student entrepreneurship program alum, recently took first place at the American Heart Association's Empowered to Serve pitch competition. She also won the fan favorite award and earned a total of $55,000 in grant funding.

The recognition comes from Best Place for Working Parents, a national collaborative and network of businesses across the U.S. dedicated to providing support for working parents through evidence-based strategies. To earn the distinction, employers must respond to an online assessment that details their support of family-friendly policies.

    Marian Magdaniel always wanted to express herself through fashion and the creative arts. She loved drawing, painting, violin, guitar and design, and especially believed that fashion was a great way to make something “come to life on your own.” Now, the 28-year-old Venezuelan-born, Houston-raised fashion student at Houston Community College’s Central Campus has learned that her multiple artistic abilities have placed her in rarified air.
