The pain of losing her youngest son, Chase Simon, to gun violence on a Third Ward street four years ago hasn’t eased at all for HCC English professor Syble Davis. But this year, like the last three, Davis is again putting her sorrow into action. She is continuing the Drive-By Toy Drive she and her family began in 2019 to honor her son, and to help bring joy and happiness to deserving children in the Third Ward area.

Howard Technology Center was at the direction of the Texas State University System Chancellor and Board of Regents in recognition of Howard’s contributions as president of the Beaumont, Texas institute for six years before he stepped-down in August.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated $25,000 to support HCC’s Public Safety program and students. The donation was made before the HCC Board of Trustees at a meeting on May 19, 2022. A manufacturing industry organization has donated $40,000 to Houston Community College to help students to succeed in skilled trade careers. The PVF Roundtable donation this month brings the organization’s total charitable contributions to the college to $150,000 since 2017 to fund scholarships for students to pursue jobs in manufacturing such as a welder, manual machinist, CNC machinist and industrial mechanic.

HCC student Leon Hosea is working hard to achieve that goal. But mastering the curriculum and showing his skills aren’t the only hurdles he must clear. Hosea lost his vision in 2014, which meant suspending his career as an aviation mechanic.

Houston Community College Libraries recently received grant funds to add a brand-new Textiles collection to the Fashion Archive as well as digitized racks of garments donated by award-winning Houston born designer Cesar Galindo. Houston Community College (HCC) songwriting instructor and two-time Dove Award winner V. Michael McKay may have inspired gospel audiences for almost 50 years, but this is the first time a student says he has helped find her “flow and rhythm” without seeing his face and from across state lines. Because of COVID-19, all of McKay’s students are taking his classes online, instead of the classroom, but sophomore Jasmine Jemison is learning from her home in Little Rock, AK.
