HCC, UnidosUS partnership program aims to keep Latino students on track

Houston Community College is partnering with UnidosUS, a Washington, D.C.-based Latino civil rights and advocacy organization, to launch a program to help Latino students to navigate college and excel in post-secondary education.

The Avanzando Through College program kicked off this fall as a 10-week course covering a range of topics to help students stay on track academically. The course provides a culturally tailored curriculum and learning strategy to help students build college-level study habits and establish learning communities with their peers.

The program also comprises workshops and events aimed at improving college retention, and students receive a $500 stipend to offset college expenses.

“Many Latinx (Latino, Latina and gender-neutral) students need help with unique challenges such as not knowing your major, lacking good study skills, exploring a career, building relationships and finding internships,” said Virginia Ramos, academic advisor at the HCC Stafford campus. “This program is good opportunity to learn what college life is about and how to navigate a very complicated world.”
