West Houston Institute’s IDEAS Academy takes part in Foodture 2K18 event

May 23, 2018

High school seniors from the West Houston Institute's IDEAS Academy displayed projects that addressed the issue of food security and how to connect our neighborhoods to fresh and healthy food, a challenge presented to them by Annie Pope of the mayor's office of innovation.

Over the course of the semester, students were divided into four teams to address, availability, access, utilization, and sustainability. Students used design thinking to come up with innovative ways to reduce food deserts in the community, and educate people about healthy foods by producing an environment in which they can actually experience them.

The hydroponic plants and vertical farming A-frame from which they were grown, as well as an app and website, were all created by the students.
