Prerequisite Coursework

Prior to admission, applicants must demonstrate mastery of the subject area(s) for the certificate sought by having the following prerequisite coursework or passing a content exam through PACT TExES Program.

The following academic coursework must be completed in your transcripts as part of the program entrance requirements. All coursework must be completed with a grade “C” or better and must be a minimum of a 1000-2000 level course (college freshman through sophomore year level) and if indicated upper level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses. Upper level includes graduate level courses.

Please note, if you do not meet the prerequisite requirements you will be considered ineligible but may complete the required coursework or exam and begin at a later date.

Acceptable Coursework by Course Prefix: English Language Arts & Reading (ENGL); Mathematics (MATH); Science (BIOL, CHEM, PHYS, GEOL, ASTR); Social Studies (HIST, GEOG, ECON, GOVT or PSCI).

Certificate Prerequisites

Core-Subjects EC-6

24 semester hours of English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area.

 

Core-Subjects 4-8

36 semester hours of English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies with at least 9 semester hours in each subject area.

 

English Language Arts & Reading/Social Studies 4-8

48 semester hours of English Language Arts & Reading and Social Studies with at least:

  • 24 semester hours of English Language Arts and Reading; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses
  • 24 semester hours of History, Geography, Economics, and Government with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area;  12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Social Studies 4-8

24 semester hours of History, Geography, Economics, and Government with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Mathematics 4-8

24 semester hours of Mathematics; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Science 4-8

24 semester hours of Life Science/Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth/Space Science with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Mathematics 7-12

24 semester hours of Mathematics; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Life Science 7-12

24 semester hours of Life Science/Biology; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Physical Science 6-12

24 semester hours of Physics, Chemistry, and Space Science with at least 8 semester hours in each subject area; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Science 7-12

24 semester hours of Life Science/Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth/Space Science with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area; 12 semester hours must be advanced level (3000-4000/Junior-Senior) courses.

 

Special Education EC-12

24 semester hours of English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies with at least 6 semester hours in each subject area.

Note: A Special Education teacher must also demonstrate knowledge of each subject they teach. You will need to pass a specific content area test, i.e., Core Subjects EC-6 or Core Subjects 4-8.

 

Bilingual Education Supplemental-Spanish

Attaches to base certificate: Must meet requirements for Core Subjects EC-6 or Core Subjects 4-8.

 

English as a Second Language Supplemental

Attaches to base certificate: Must meet requirements for “ Core Subjects EC-6 or Core Subjects 4-8
