Medical Billing and Coding training offered at HCC Missouri City Campus

Feb 10, 2016

Fort Bend County has experienced a recent growth spurt which has created a need for more trained office staff in the medical field. The Houston Community College Missouri City Campus will help fill that need by offering two certificates: Medical Business Office (Medical Billing) and Comprehensive Coding System (Medical Coding) this semester.

“I worked in the medical field for 25 years before coming to HCC. I spent part of that time in a large clinic specializing in various practices as an office manager," HCC Health Information Specialist Jackie Franklin said. “The doctor saw 40 to 80 patients a day. The staff could not keep up with the charts that had to be coded and the paperwork to bill patients and insurance claims.”

Medical Billing is an entry-level certificate. This certificate takes less than one-semester to complete and provides students with knowledge and skills required of clerical health care professionals. Students enrolled in this program can expect to work in a hands-on environment with medical terminology, patient scheduling, insurance verification, medical records, collections, accounts payable, financial reporting, and medical billing.

Comprehensive Coding System is an advanced entry-level certificate, and takes less than one-semester to complete. In medical coding, the employee assigns diagnostics and procedures codes within the electronic medical record, while maintaining compliance with establishing rules and regulatory body guidelines. Students enrolled in this program can expect to work with ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding, basic anatomy and physiology and medical terminology.

“These two programs offer students the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in managing a medical office, billing for healthcare services, and coding patient care delivered for billing and medical statistic purposes,” HCC Continuing Education Director Kirk White said.

These courses will be offered at the HCC Missouri City Campus located at 5855 Sienna Springs Way beginning Monday, Feb. 29. The deadline to register is Friday, Feb. 26.
