HCC updates assistive technologies

Jul 28, 2016

In an effort to increase access to resources and class materials for students with visual and hearing impairments, Houston Community College is bringing its assistive technologies into the 21st Century.

HCC staff recently trained on the new Purple Video Relay Service (VRS), which allows students who are deaf access to external community resources. American Sign Language is 100 percent visual, so Purple VRS allows students who speak American Sign Language the opportunity to use their natural language.

The Topaz PHD Portable Video Magnifiers have also been updated and are available for checkout through the HCC library for two weeks at a time. These lightweight devices magnify and provide high contrast options for text and other hardcopy materials.

Accessing interpreting services at HCC, advising, or Ability Services Counseling is now free from constraints of transportation or typing.
