Jobs or Leadership Positions in Community
Within my community and peer groups, I am frequently sought out as a mentor and advisor. I also take an active role in my community Bible study.
Talents or Hobbies, or Something People Don’t Know About You
I have a passion for discovering unique and historic libraries across the Houston area, seeking out peaceful environments that inspire my academic focus.
I also am an avid “upcycler” with a talent for creative problem-solving, often repurposing unconventional materials to create personalized, high-end gifts and functional home solutions. This hobby reflects my ability to think outside of the box and find resourceful, detail-oriented ways to approach any challenge.
Why did you enroll at HCC Coleman College?
The shortest answer is to pursue a career in healthcare. My desire is to help people, especially with incurable diseases such as cancer. My driving force has always been my mother, who passed away from cancer in 2022, and my brother Rick, who died from cancer recently.
Why did you choose your program of study?
After years of providing direct care in hospice and veterinary settings, I chose Health Information Technology to impact patient outcomes through the power of data analytics. I am driven to work behind the scenes, managing the vital health data used to track disease outbreaks, predict trends, and develop treatments for life-threatening illnesses like cancer.
This program allows me to combine my healthcare experience with my desire to contribute to medical research and organizational efficiency at a systemic level.
What do you like best about your college experience?
Honestly, it’s learning. I believe we should never stop learning to improve our lives and the lives of those we love. My college experience has shown me how that personal growth translates into community impact, allowing us to contribute to positive change for everyone around us.
What do you like best about your program of study?
What I value most about my program is the ability to transform raw data into a powerful tool for medical research and life-saving discoveries. I am inspired by the fact that I can profoundly impact a patient’s future without ever needing to meet them in person.
It is incredibly rewarding to know that by meticulously managing medical records, I am playing a vital role in changing the future of healthcare and improving lives behind the scenes.
When you are tired, what motivates you to push forward?
As a non-traditional student, I am motivated by a clear sense of purpose and the desire to make the most of my professional future. My drive comes from a commitment to maximize my impact on the community, which is why I am graduating a year early to enter the workforce sooner.
I am fueled by the knowledge that every year I spend in this field is an opportunity to use my skills to change lives and contribute to the world around me.
What advice can you offer to help other students succeed?
My advice is to remain focused and determined by looking beyond your current hurdles and toward the impact you will eventually make in the lives of others.
Despite managing ADHD and anxiety among other challenges, I have maintained my place on the Dean’s List for consecutive semesters. Success comes when you refuse to let personal challenges/obstacles define your limits and instead use your determination to fuel academic and consistent growth.
Any final thoughts?
My journey has taught me that no matter the obstacles or timing, your purpose remains valid. I live by the principle, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” I am committed to moving forward with “no retreat, no surrender.”
My goal is to leave a legacy of service and excellence that honors my past while building a brighter future for my community.
