Preparing the next generation of space and tech talent through HCC partnership
A new partnership between HCC and Space Center Houston aims to strengthen STEM education and create workforce pathways for students pursuing careers in artificial intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies.
A new partnership between Houston City College (HCC) and Space Center Houston aims to strengthen STEM education and create workforce pathways for students pursuing careers in artificial intelligence, robotics and emerging technologies.
Rhonda Glover, ecosystem manager for HCC's artificial intelligence degree program, said the collaboration will connect students with educational and career opportunities ranging from K-12 programming to workforce training and industry engagement.
“Houston is Space City, and this partnership allows us to build on the region’s leadership in space exploration and innovation,” Glover said during a recent appearance on HCCTV’s Up 2 the Minute.
The initiative is designed to create connections between students and employers while ensuring learners at different stages can access relevant training opportunities through summer programs, work-study experiences, continuing education and degree pathways.
As businesses increasingly adopt AI technologies, Glover said employers are seeking workers with the skills to implement and manage those systems. HCC is addressing that demand through programs such as Train the Trainer, developed with Google, and Eagle Spark, supported by Apple.
She said HCC students are learning advanced applications of AI, including agentic AI and robotics integration, positioning them for careers that go beyond basic AI tools.
The partnership with Space Center Houston also creates opportunities for students to apply those skills to real-world challenges involving autonomous systems, robotics and space exploration.
“We’re preparing students to solve practical problems and support emerging technologies that will shape the future of industries, including aerospace,” Glover said.
Glover noted that industry partnerships are becoming increasingly important as employers look for specialized technical talent. HCC's relationships with organizations such as Google, Apple and Tesla, along with its large student population, help position the college as a workforce development hub for the region.
Addressing concerns about AI's impact on employment, Glover said workers should focus on adapting to new technologies and using them to enhance their value in the workplace.
“AI is changing how work gets done, but people who learn to use these tools effectively will be better positioned for future opportunities,” she said.
Houston City College currently offers a bachelor's degree in artificial intelligence and robotics, helping students develop skills in one of the fastest-growing areas of technology while meeting workforce needs across the Houston region.
