Houston City College (HCC) and Space Center Houston have joined forces to propel STEM education and strengthen workforce pathways for students across the Houston region.

Leaders from both organizations formalized a new mission on Tuesday, June 9, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the HCC West Houston Institute. The partnership is designed to connect classroom learning with real-world industry experience and emerging careers in aerospace and related industries.

“This partnership brings NASA-level science and exploration into our curriculum, providing students with hands-on workshops, astronaut presentations and aerospace projects that inspire future careers in science and technology,” said HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D. “By combining HCC’s educational resources with Space Center Houston’s industry expertise, we are creating new pathways for students to reach new heights.”

The agreement outlines key initiatives that will launch new opportunities for students and educators, including:

  • Workforce and credential pathways: Key elements from Space Center University and Accelerate Space to prepare learners for careers in the space economy
  • Experiential learning and educator development: Space-focused summer camps and AI-driven STEM training programs
  • Research, grants and alignment: Joint research initiatives, grant collaboration and coordination with the Texas Space Commission
  • Shared vision for space education: Expansion of programs that connect education, workforce development and industry needs

William Harris, president and CEO of Space Center Houston, the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center, emphasized the importance of collaboration.

“Education is at the heart of our world. Houston has long been a city built by innovators, problem solvers and people who want to take on big challenges,” Harris said. “Our future depends on developing talent and creating pathways for success, and HCC plays a critical role in preparing students for the broader workforce.”

The collaboration also aims to inspire the next generation of learners and innovators.

“This partnership allows us to create experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage discovery and help people imagine what comes next,” said Daniel Newmyer, chief learning officer at Space Center Houston. “When people are given the opportunity to learn, they see what’s possible and realize there is no limit to their journey.”

As Houston continues to lead in aerospace and technology, the partnership will help fuel a stronger workforce pipeline and launch the next generation of talent.
