Douglas Gutierrez Sr. is no stranger to hard work. A lifelong resident of Houston’s East End, Guiterrez understands the importance of perseverance, responsibility and providing for his family.

Today, he is building a brighter future for himself and his loved ones as a student in the Welding Technology program at Houston City College (HCC), where he is pursuing a workforce career pathway rooted in skill, stability and long-term opportunity.

Adding to that momentum was an East End District Scholarship award of $1,032.00—generous support that arrived at a critical moment. Like many workforce students, Guiterrez balances the demands of school with family obligations and everyday expenses. The funds provided immediate relief and tangible stability.

“Receiving financial support lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,” Gutierrez said. “It helped me take care of my family, keep my car on the road and get the steel-toe boots I need for class. I now can stay focused on my welding training and building a better future for my kids and myself.”

These necessities are the foundation that allows him to stay enrolled, focused as he progresses toward program completion. Gutierrez can continue developing the hands-on skills demanded by Houston’s growing industrial and manufacturing sectors, bringing him closer to a high-demand, high-wage career.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, while overall national growth in welding employment is steady, replacement demand remains high due to retirements and workforce turnover. The BLS estimates that employers will need to fill roughly 45,000 welding jobs each year over the next decade, driven largely by an aging skilled-trades workforce.

The American Welding Society reports that Texas leads the nation in welding employment, with more than 65,000 welders statewide and job growth projected to exceed 20 percent by the end of the decade, far outpacing the national average. In Houston—home to one of the country’s largest construction, energy, petrochemical and manufacturing hubs—skilled welders remain essential to keeping the region’s economy strong and competitive.

To meet this growing workforce demand while reducing financial barriers for students, HCC offers targeted workforce pathways through Eagle Connect, a program designed to provide Level One certifications and fast-tracked training programs, often at little to no cost to students.

Through Eagle Connect, eligible participants can access scholarships—and in many cases full tuition coverage—for high-demand fields including healthcare, automotive technology, architectural design and construction, digital and information technology, material science and smart manufacturing and transportation. By combining accelerated training with financial support, Eagle Connect enables students to move quickly from the classroom into in-demand careers that directly support Houston’s evolving workforce needs.

Violeta Vazquez, Ed.D., dean of the Material Science Center of Excellence at Houston City College, emphasizes how programs like Welding Technology are designed to meet both student needs and regional industry demand.

“Our Welding Technology program prepares students for high-paying, in-demand careers through rigorous hands-on training and strong industry alignment,” Dr. Vazquez said. “When students receive support like the East End District Scholarship and programs like Eagle Connect, barriers that often stand between talent and completion are removed. That combination—quality training and meaningful financial support—is what drives student success and long-term economic mobility.”

For students like Gutierrez, opportunity comes not just from learning a trade, but from receiving timely support that keeps them moving forward. Through investments in workforce education and student success, Houston City College and the East End District are helping build a stronger, more resilient future—one skilled graduate at a time.

Registration is underway for the summer and fall semesters at Houston City College, offering new opportunities for students ready to take the next step toward a high-demand career.
