Getting Approved to Teach HCC Online
An application form and the Course approval form must be completed and approved through HCC Online before an instructor can teach a HCC Online course. Training requirements are listed below. Approval to teach a Hybrid (50% on campus and 50% off) or a Web-enhanced course(s) goes through the Department Chairs.
- Application Form to teach Online (credit) courses. Important instructions and deadlines are posted on this form. Contact Shirley Smith (713-718-5475) for more information.
- HCC Online Course Approval Form - for HCC Online (credit) courses. This form is to be completed by the appropriate department chair and program coordinator prior to the course being offered to HCC students.
- CE Course Approval Form – to teach Continuing Education Online courses. This form is to be completed and submitted by the Continuing Education, Director of Operations prior to the course being offered to HCC students.
HCC Online Faculty Training Requirements
All faculty teaching HCC Online for the first time at HCC (whether developing their own course or teaching a model course section) are required to have completed the minimum training requirements. These include the following classes offered through the Faculty Academy. All of these classes are online and self-paced.

Training Resources for HCC Online Faculty
HCC Online Syllabus Inclusions
The HCC Online Student Handbook contains policies and procedures unique to the HCC Online student. Students should have reviewed the handbook as part of the mandatory orientation. It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with the handbook's contents. The handbook contains valuable information, answers, and resources, such as HCC Online contacts, policies and procedures (how to drop, attendance requirements, etc.), student services (ADA, financial aid, degree planning, etc.), course information, testing procedures, technical support, and academic calendars.
Early Alert Referral
What is Early Alert?
Early Alert (EA) is a collaborative effort between professors and counselors to help students who are at risk of failing one or more of their classes at HCC.
Recommended Steps for Utilizing EA:
1. Identify student(s) at risk
- Academic performance
- Student services referral
2. Whenever possible, professors should first discuss the concern with the student.
3. Complete the Early Alert form for each student referral.
Please utilize the Early Alert referral form found by signing into your HCC People Soft account.
A counselor will follow-up with the faculty member to provide:
- feedback about the student's issue
- counseling intervention

Online Course Evaluation Rubric
HCC department chairs are responsible for the ongoing quality of all HCC Online and other online courses in their areas of instruction. Therefore, it is the role and responsibility of department chairs to perform evaluations/observations of their faculty who teach distance education courses just as it is their responsibility to do the same with on-campus faculty and courses.
However, it is the responsibility of the HCC Online Department to recommend criteria for department chairs to include in the HCC Online and online faculty/course evaluation process. Therefore, in addition to the PEP instrument used for faculty teaching on-campus courses, this Online Course Evaluation Rubric has been approved by both the Academic and Workforce Deans and PEP for all online courses, including HCC Online.
The Online Course Observation Rubric is one of several data sources for evaluating the effectiveness of instruction of online courses – HCC Online, hybrid, and web-enhanced. It can be complemented with other sources of data such as on-campus observation forms, SEOI reports, syllabi, class handouts and projects, tests, etc.
Principles of Good Practice
The HCC Online program ascribes to the "Principles of Good Practice for Academic Degree and Certificate Programs and Credit Courses Offered Electronically," recommended by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Distance Education Advisory Committee. All institutions are encouraged to apply these principles to ensure the quality of their HCC Online program and to ensure the excellence of their online courses, degree and certificate programs, and instruction.
