Twelve years later, Riccio's, who is the chef of March restaurant in Houston, perseverance, labor and culinary skills have earned him the highly coveted MICHELIN Star rating. 

The Occupational Therapy Assistant students won first place in the Student Knowledge Challenge Bowl at a state conference on Nov. 15 and took home a $1,000 prize.

Eight finalists, all veterans or veteran-dependents, showcased their innovative business ideas in a recent virtual pitch competition, vying for a share of over $10,000 in cash prizes. HCC has acquired an aircraft to use in its comprehensive aviation maintenance technician program. The plane – a single-engine Cessna 150 – will be housed at the college’s North Forest campus.

The $20,000 gift to the HCC Foundation continues Comcast’s support of HCC’s education mission. HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences is home to the Endoscopy Technician program, the only one in the state and one of three in the nation. It provides a certificate over two semesters.

Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with Houston Community College (HCC) and Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), has been awarded $2.8 million from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education (NSF ATE) program to create the National Applied Artificial Intelligence Consortium (NAAIC), a groundbreaking initiative that aims to foster the growth of technician-level artificial intelligence (AI) professionals across the nation.

The Texas economy continues to grow and attract jobs, leading the nation in the number of roles created. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, from March 2023 to March this year, the state added 270,700 jobs–the most for any state in the nation.

Patrick Mayorquin joined several of his classmates for a celebratory lunch highlighting the one-year anniversary of a grant provided by Johnson Controls to educate future workers in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), fire and security fields. The $100,000 grant has provided $1,000 individual scholarships to 45 students in the program.

In 2022, the City of Houston received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for a solar jobs program to provide career opportunities for residents without college degrees and living in under-resourced and underserved neighborhoods. The city turned to HCC for help in putting training in place. The college received about $250,000 to cover tuition, fees, tools and exams to train interested students in solar photovoltaic installation skills through next summer.

Representatives from the Consular Corps of Houston heard Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., call for closer collaboration to find and train international students for meaningful workforce jobs in the region’s robust economy.

When the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges approved two new baccalaureate degree programs at Houston Community College, it enlarged the pipeline to jobs for thousands in the college’s service area.

In a heartening act of philanthropy, Patsy Chappelear recently donated $30,000 to the Houston Community College Foundation. The fund, named the Patsy S. Chappelear Engineering Endowed Scholarship Fund, will provide scholarships of $1,000 each year to qualified HCC engineering students.

A series of HCC summer camps in June and July seeks to introduce middle and high school students to the latest technologies and areas of IT studies.

Jobseekers, students and members of the community are invited to attend a symposium and job fair June 14 that will provide them with employment and education opportunities. The Workforce Development Symposium and Job Fair is set for 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the HCC Missouri City campus at 1600 Texas Parkway in Missouri City.

The Houston Community College Transportation Center of Excellence - Electric Vehicle training program received a donation of $200,000 at the HCC Board of Trustees meeting on May 15. Funds are being used to provide an eight-hour safety and fundamentals course for more than 300 City of Houston’s and Harris County fleet department employees.

Due to widespread damage and power outages across the region, all HCC campuses will be closed Friday, May 17. Classes will resume Monday, May 20. Spring commencement ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 17, at NRG Arena have been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

When Riyam Al Msari was studying at Houston Community College (HCC) a few years ago, she could have never imagined where she would be today. She is now on the cusp of a very bright future as she works toward a Ph.D. in biological engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Houston Community College Central College will host the 2024 Spring Fashion Show on May 3. The event has the theme of Chromatique and will feature fashion visions from 14 graduating design students. Models will walk the runway at 7:30 p.m. at the William W.
