Music
The Music Program at Houston City College prepares students for seamless academic transfer to four-year universities to complete a bachelor’s degree in music. The curriculum builds a strong foundation in music theory, sight-singing and ear training, composition, and ensemble performance. Students also develop their skills through focused study in piano, voice, or instrumental concentrations.

Music, A.A.
The Associate of Arts in Music prepares students for academic transfer to a public university or college in Texas as juniors in liberal or fine arts music programs. The program builds a foundation in music theory, aural skills, music literature, applied study, and ensemble performance. Music courses also fulfill HCC’s Creative Arts Core requirement and serve students interested in the general study of music.
To be eligible for an Associate in Arts (AA), an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT), or an Associate in Science (AS) degree from HCC, a student must successfully:
Complete at least 60 semester hours of credit as follows: (a) for the AA degree, 43 hours of required core courses and 17 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student's transfer major (b) for the AAT degree, 44 hours of required core courses plus 16-18 hours of required pre-teaching courses (c) for the AS degree, 43 hours of required core courses plus six additional hours of mathematics, four additional hours of natural science, and 7 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student's transfer major.
- Complete a minimum of 18 semester hours toward the degree in the Houston City College System. These hours may not be satisfied through credit by exam.
- Have an overall 2.0 HCC grade point average.
- Satisfy TSI requirements.
- Resolve all financial obligations and return all College materials, including library books, to HCC prior to graduation.
Students will be able to:

Keyboard Skills: The student will demonstrate mastery of scales, chords, & harmonization of melodies using varied accompaniment techniques. Students will perform selected compositions and demonstrate competence in various transpositions.

Music Theory Skills: The student will analyze and compose advanced 4 measure segments which include; harmony, melody, rhythm, and cadences.

Ear Training Skills: The student will sing and notate diatonic and chromatic intervals, chords, rhythms, and harmonic chord progressions.

Music Literature Skills: The student will be able to identify and describe the periods of music history including general style characteristics, major composers of each period, and representative works. Students will be able to critically evaluate musical works and articulate the relationship between historical events and musical styles/aesthetics.

Ensemble Performance Skills: The student will apply learned vocal/instrumental skills and techniques in an ensemble performance.

Solo Performance Skills: The student will demonstrate learned vocal/instrumental skills and techniques in a jury of 5-10 minutes of music appropriate to MUAP Semester 4 SLO’s in a solo performance.
