[FRAUD ALERT] Fake Check Scam Targeting the HCC Community

Monday, April 27, 2026 07:04:16 PM CDT

Dear HCC Family, This email is a FRAUD ALERT regarding a fake check scam targeting members of the HCC Community. Please read this email carefully and take steps to protect yourself. The current ongoing scam relates to a fake Auto Wrap campaign and contains a formal-looking offer letter on what appears to be HCC's letterhead and a fraudulent check issued as advance payment. Fake check scams often involve receiving a check with instructions to deposit it and quickly send funds—or provide a copy of the deposit slip—elsewhere. Afterwards, the check proves fraudulent, leaving the victim responsible for the financial loss and possible legal implications. The deceptive letter asks recipients to deposit the fake check into their bank account and then send a copy of the deposit slip to a private Gmail account. The scammer may follow up by impersonating a college official in text messages. Because a deposit slip can contain the depositor’s name and bank account number, providing this information to an unverified third party is dangerous, which can lead to other serious matters such as identity fraud. If you receive an unexpected check or suspicious payment request, DO NOT DEPOSIT IT or otherwise act on it. Instead, you should contact the HCC police department at 713.718.8770 (general line). Thank you. Houston City College Police Department
