Houston City College (HCC) is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week.

The nationwide event – from April 26 to May 2 –  highlights the significant growth of apprenticeship programs and showcases how they are developing a highly skilled workforce to strengthen the state and national economy.

Registered apprenticeships are industry-driven career pathways where employees get paid to work while receiving classroom instruction. For employers, apprenticeships increase retention, mitigate excessive costs of training, create a reliable talent pipeline, and equip workers with the skills needed to keep businesses competitive.

The HCC Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship HUB is the main source in the region for mobilizing partners, students and stakeholders to bring people seeking learning and employment through apprenticeships with companies seeking new workers or who are willing to train workers for their industries.

The college continues to win grants and establish new partnerships as a leader in workforce development while expanding opportunities for students to earn, learn and lead.

“Apprenticeships turn into careers while providing opportunities for students to earn a paycheck while they learn,” said HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D. at the HCC Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship Hub National Apprenticeship Week Breakfast & Awards event held April 30 at the college’s West Loop campus.

“That’s why we are meeting regularly with our partners to discuss apprenticeships in a wide range of industries, including emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, clean energy and advanced manufacturing,” she told the gathering.
