HCC holds a site license covering all faculty, staff, and students. Most people will use Wolfram Alpha Pro, which answers questions by computing the answer rather than predicting text.
That difference matters. When you ask it to solve an equation, convert units, or chart a dataset, it calculates. It is not guessing at what a plausible answer looks like, which is what a chat assistant does with math.

Getting started
This one is not HCC single sign-on. Wolfram needs its own account. You create a Wolfram ID using your HCC email address, then request the products you want. Budget about ten minutes the first time. After that you just sign in.
- Create a Wolfram ID. Go to user.wolfram.com and choose Create Account. Use your HCC email address, since that is what connects you to the site license.
- Verify your email. Wolfram sends a validation link. Click it before going further, or the next step will not work.
- Request the products you want. Sign in to the Wolfram User Portal, then use the request links below. Fill in the short form and confirm activation for each one.
- For desktop products only, copy the activation key from the confirmation, download the installer from the Product Summary page, and activate after installing.

- Mathematica Online, browser based.
- Mathematica Desktop, installed on your computer.

Faculty can share these links with students and colleagues.
Good places to start
- Try this: Solve 3x squared minus 7x plus 2 equals 0, and show me the steps.
- Try this: Plot enrollment of 4200, 4650, 4390, and 5100 across four years and show the trend line.
- Try this: Convert 45 kilonewtons per square meter to pounds per square inch.
Where it beats a chat assistant
- Anything with arithmetic in it. Gemini and Copilot can get math wrong in ways that look right. Wolfram computes it.
- Step-by-step solutions, which is the feature Alpha Pro adds over the free version. Useful for students learning a method rather than just wanting the answer.
- Unit conversions, formulas, statistics, chemistry, and physics reference data.
- Real-world datasets you can pull straight into a lesson.
A good habit is to use Gemini to understand a concept and Wolfram to check the numbers.
For faculty
- Demonstrate calculations or data analysis live during a lecture.
- Build assignments where students explore and manipulate real data.
- Assign the Wolfram tutorials as homework so students learn the tool outside class time.
- Contact the Center for Learning Innovation to set up a consultation on using Wolfram in your courses.
What to keep out
The same rules apply here. Do not enter student names attached to their work, employee records, health information, or account numbers.
