About The Adjunct Academy
What is the Adjunct Academy?
Founded in 2008 by Houston Community College faculty, the Adjunct Academy’s purpose is to enhance the pedagogical and institutional knowledge of our adjunct faculty. After seven cycles of the program at Northwest College and one at Southeast, the program has been shaped into an effective series of eight, four-hour workshops that are now offered across the district by trained facilitators at campuses convenient for adjunct participants.
Who is eligible?
Current Houston Community College part time instructors are welcome to apply to the program. The cohorts are multi-disciplinary to encourage discourse between participants from all walks of HCC life.
In the 2016-2017 Adjunct Academy, six cohorts were formed, each comprised of up to 20 members. Participants came from 33 HCC programs in academic, workforce, and continuing education.
This tapestry of diversity is by design. Best practices in teaching and learning are universal and as relevant to a cosmetology instructor as to an English or an Engineering one. In fact, the exchange of ideas between different programs opens more windows for reflection, understanding, and learning.
Adjunct Academy Locations
In order to maximize participation, the Adjunct Academy is designed to serve adjuncts by offering cohorts convenient to where they work or live. When applying to the program, adjuncts are asked to indicate two campuses where they would like to attend the workshops. Based on these preferences, cohorts of up to 18 are formed that bring together adjuncts at or close to the preferred campus choices.
Face-to-face workshops run from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and include a light breakfast and lunch.
