March For Science - April 22, 2017

MARCH FOR SCIENCE

What does the March for Science - Houston stand for?
It is is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community.
It champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity.
Open and honest science communication and inclusive public outreach benefits science and the general public.
We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest.
We support STEM education that teaches children and adults to think critically, ask questions, and evaluate truth based on the weight of evidence.
We want to ensure the federal budget reflects the powerful and vital role that science plays in supporting our democracy. 
We advocate federal funding in support of research, scientific hiring, and agency application of science to management. Funding cannot be limited -- scientific support must be inclusive of diverse disciplines.

Houston, at its core, is a city built on science. From NASA, the Texas Medical Center - the largest medical center in the world, the many world renowned educational institutions that encompass any science field you can imagine, to the oil and gas industry, our region predominantly relies upon science. 
The policies recently adopted will directly affect the scientific community of our city. 
On April 22nd we join forces to fight for our scientists, our people and for the integrity of fact-based science.

Route: Walk down Bagby St towards Dallas St

Turn left on Dallas St, walk 3 blocks

Turn left on Louisiana St, walk 3 blocks

Turn left on Walker St to Houston City Hall 1 block down

Rail: You may also park near the Texas Medical Center or Museum District (or anywhere along the Metro Rail route) and ride the North Bound (NB) 700 Metro Rail leaving from several locations along Fannin Street, exit Metro Rail at the Main Street Square Stn NB stop. Walk South on Main Street to Walker Street and turn RIGHT, Sam Houston Park will be about 6 blocks down.

Camp INSPIRE - April 21, 2017

Camp INSPIRE is the workshop that will be interactive and hands-on.  
It will showcase Vanguard rooms at Alief Campus.
You will work on a user-friendly, step-by-step faculty handbook for operating the electronic features of the room, as well as interactive activities and resources that will facilitate higher order learning and are especially suited for use in the Vanguard rooms (but rest assured that pedagogy will drive the technology bus, not the other way around!).  
Eventually, we hope that faculty might chose to test-drive such tools and techniques during a guest session (or even a whole semester) in a local Vanguard room.

Beware the room only seats 36, so registeration is required.

STEM Research Opportunities

Rice University Nanotechnology Summer Research Program

Rice University each year invites Community College faculty and students to participate in nanotechnology summer research program.
Faculty are placed in a Rice faculty's research laboratory and assigned a graduate or post-doctoral student mentor.
The research groups have weekly meetings to discuss research experience.
Faculty also get to participate in symposium and workshops to share their research projects and lesson plans.

There is a stipend of $6,000 provided after the completion of the program.

For faculty, the schedule is 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, June 8 - July 17 (6 weeks) 
For students, the program will be 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, June 1 - August 7 (10 weeks)

Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) for Faculty and Students

The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce vital to Department of Energy (DOE) mission areas. In this program, selected university/college faculty members collaborate with DOE laboratory research staff on a research project of mutual interest. Faculty member participants may invite up to two students (one of which may be a graduate student) to participate in the research project. Applicants establish their collaborations with laboratory research staff in advance of applying and must submit a co-developed research proposal as part of the application. Students apply separately at the invitation of the faculty member.

Selected faculty and students receive stipends, and may qualify for travel and housing assistance.
The Summer Term placements are for 10 weeks duration between May and August timeframe.
