Section # 7 Recognizing the Author's Tone

It is important that you watch the video first.

The author’s tone of voice refers to the words that are added to show point of view, emotion, or attitude.

The strategy explained in this section is:

  1. Recognize the author’s tone to help you identify the reason why they are writing.

Practice tone to entertain:

  1. “Oh, it’s you!” He said, enthusiastically. (or joyfully)
  2. “Oh, it’s you.” He spat, angrily. (or bitterly)

Practice tone to persuade:

  1. President Obama will be remembered for his ridiculous idea to force his health care plan upon everyone.
  2. President Obama will be remembered for his compassionate plan to provide health care to all Americans.

Practice tone to inform:

  1.  President Obama proposed the national health-care plan.
