HCC Path to Profession Program
HCC is participating in a new experimental site focused on the Federal Work Study (FWS) Program through the Department of Education. This program, HCC Path to Profession, allows students to receive FWS funds for career-related work study positions like apprenticeships, internships, clinical rotations, etc.
This program is designed to gauge whether students are better served when they are paid for work that supplements their class learning and allowed access to off-campus FWS employment aligned with their HCC program. HCC will benefit from expanded partnerships with business leaders, who can provide feedback on academic programs and curriculum to ensure HCC students are graduating with workplace competencies as well as subject matter expertise gained through their studies.

How will this benefit HCC students?
This program will benefit students by allowing them to find work-study positions that directly relate to their academic fields. Previously, students who secured work-study positions often worked in areas that were of no relevance to their field of study.
This program allows HCC to remove limits on FWS funds that support students who are employed by a community partner in the private-sector, allow students to work up to 40 hours per week, reduce the share of wages from community partners permitting them to allocate more positions for students, and allow HCC to pay eligible students for real-world work experiences to supplement their education and prepare them for entrance into the work force after graduation.
How can I find a position in this program?
- Search for available positions in your field of study.
- Once on the job portal page, you will need to select “search” which is located on the right-hand side of the page (in black) right above “Returning Users”.
- Once you select the “search” button, the website will navigate you to see all open positions.
How will community partners benefit from this program?
Taking advantage of this Path to Profession Project will help community partners to create a robust talent conduit, help young adult workers to fill critical skill gaps, contribute to workforce diversity, and help drive the flow of new ideas. Community partners will benefit from the wage offset this program provides. It will allow companies to save resources and thus take on more student learners and create a large pool of qualified candidates for open positions.
Teaching workplace competencies that go beyond the traditional classroom setting will help graduating students assimilate to their future workforce positions. This program removed limits on FWS funds that support students who are employed by a community partner in the private-sector and allows students to work more than the typical 19.5 hours permitted in previous on-campus work-study positions.
What are the expectations for community partners?
Employers and HCC will work together to:
- Review and sign the partnership agreement
- Coordinate schedules and prevent conflict between academic and employment activities
- Ensure that FWS supported private-sector employment is academically relevant and aligns with the student’s career goals
- HCC will pay 100% of students wages biweekly and invoice the employer for the remaining 25% of the student wages each month
- Student wages will be $15 per hour.
- Monitor FWS experiment’s expenditures
- Provide student level data
- Report total FWS expenditures on the FISAP the following year
- Use any additional FWS funds specifically for the purposes of participating in this experiment
- Award and pay FWS funds to students for employment opportunities that have been created as a direct result of the institution’s participation in the experiment
FWS Off-Campus Positions:
- Must be appropriate and reasonable based upon the type of work a student may perform
- Must relate to the student’s academic and career goals
- Must be in line with the student’s skill level
- May not replace regular employees, including workers on strike or those positions that were eliminated
- May use an application and screening process led by the employer to select successful candidates
All FWS Job Descriptions Must Include:
- Position name and classification
- Employer and supervisor name and address
- Department/office and location where the student will be employed
- Purpose or role of the position within the organization
- Procedures for determining a student’s rate of pay
- Evaluation procedures and schedules
- Duties, responsibilities, and rates of pay associated with position
- General and specific qualifications for the position and rates of pay
- Beginning and ending dates for student’s employment

Path to Profession Vs. Traditional Work Study
While both programs provide HCC students with the opportunity to earn money while they continue their education, here are some key differences between the two.
Path to Profession:
- Allows students to be paid for apprenticeships, internships, clinical rotations, and other career-related positions with community partners
- Students are permitted to work up to 40 hours per week
- Hourly pay rate of $15.00
Traditional Work Study:
- Students historically secure positions on or off campus in positions that are of no relevance to their field of study
- Students can only work 19.5 hours per week in the Traditional Work Study Program
- Hourly pay rate of $11.00
