Be heard with HCC's new EGLS3
Dear Faculty and Students,
We are excited to implement a new assessment tool of teaching and learning, the EGLS3, Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System, to replace the SEOI, Student Evaluation of Instruction. We hope the online easy-to-use EGLS3 will further encourage faculty and students to work together to improve teaching and learning in a methodical, thoughtful way. For students, it is your opportunity to be heard. For faculty, it's both an opportunity to be recognized by your students for a job well done and to learn of areas to improve. This is only the first step in a change of culture to embed considered student feedback in the evaluation process. We also plan to build program-based and faculty-driven professional development for improvement in specific teaching areas. Welcome to the new EGLS3!

SEOI: Houston Community College’s former paper method to administer the Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEOI) survey had been in place for a long time. Given the current technology, we were looking at other administration methodologies. In the SEOI paper process, the Office of Institutional Research:
• Manually prepared and routed more than 5,000 packets and 100,000 SEOI instruments each semester
• Distributed materials to instructors and collected it from proctors (who administered the survey to the students)
• Scanned the surveys upon receipt
• Generated the final report and sent it to the chairs on a disk
This process was cumbersome, labor intensive and costly. Also, the results were not used in a systematic evaluation process.

EGLS3 – Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System
To make evaluation more efficient, HCC is implementing a new online teaching assessment tool, the Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System (EGLS3).
The new EGLS3 will:
• Facilitate student evaluations of their instructors (not the course or the content)
• Allow college-wide comparison in key areas
• Provide a measure of teaching effectiveness
as perceived by students.
• Be implemented online to allow flexibility, transparency, and accountability.
Additional Features
• To promote higher response rates, instructors will be notified of the number of respondents throughout the survey period and can remind students to participate.
• Students will receive notices about the system in all syllabi and a standard statement will also be included in CurricUNET (www.curricunet.com/hccs).
