Test-Taking Strategies
Prior to Testing
1. Contact the HCC campus that you will be attending to determine both the registration and testing schedule.
2. If you require special testing accommodations due to disability, see your ADA counselor at your college. It is recommended that the student start this process at least 60 days in advance of the published registration dates.
3. If you require accommodations for factors other than a documented disability, see the counselor/advisor at your college at least five working days prior to testing.
4. An assessment fee is required of all first-time examinees at HCC (see your counselor/advisor for specific test fee requirements).
5. All examinees must provide an Assessment Authorization Form (AA Form) to the test administrator prior to testing. The AA Form is issued by your counselor/advisor.
Day of the Test
1. Arrive at least one-half hour before testing is scheduled to begin.
2. Be prepared to stay for the entire test.
3. Cell phones, beepers and other electronic communication equipment are not allowed in the test room.
4. Be upbeat and positive about the test you are about to take.
5. Bring your Assessment Authorization Form, current valid photo ID, Fee Receipt and a #2 pencil with you at the time of testing.
6. Listen and read all directions carefully. If you have questions regarding test procedures, raise your hand. The test administrator or proctor will address your question. They cannot address any question regarding the content of the test.
7. Answer all requested identifying information about yourself (name, date of birth, Social Security or student ID number, test date) completely and clearly.
8. Remember that once the test starts, you will not be permitted to leave the room until a break is called.
9. You cannot take food and/or drinks in the test room.
Before You Mark Your Answers
1. Read each passage and question carefully.
2. Review all possible answers before answering.
3. Re-read passages and questions if necessary before answering the question.
4. Mark the answer sheet carefully.
5. Do not write on the test book.
6. Answer easy questions first. If you do not know an answer to a multiple-choice question, try and rule out answers that you know are definitely wrong. Your chances of guessing the right answer are better if you use this process.
7. Use your time wisely.
After the Test
1. When time is called or when you have completed the test, raise your hand and remain quiet in your seat.
2. Wait for the test administrator or proctor to collect all required test material from you.
3. Your test administrator or proctor will inform you when you can leave the test room.
4. Your test administrator or proctor will inform you when you will receive your test results.
