CTLE Center For Teaching & Learning Excellence

The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), (Public Law 101-336) passed in 1990,
protects the civil rights of people who have disabilities. Under ADA a disability is
defined as a physical or mental disability which substantially limits a major life activity.
The law is intended to enable individuals with disabilities to attend college on an equal
basis with all other students. Colleges and Universities cannot refuse to accept an
otherwise qualified person simply because of a disability. If the person with a disability
meets established entry criteria, then the college must ensure the student has an equal
opportunity to attend and participate in "all" college courses and programs for which
he/she qualifies. This means providing "reasonable accommodations" on a case by case
basis.
