What is Statways?
Houston Community College has joined the consortia of higher education institutions to create a new pathway for students who place in developmental math. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, in collaboration with the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin, is mobilizing a community of professionals to create Statway – A Pathway TO and THROUGH Statistics. Statway would present those students who place into developmental mathematics at the elementary algebra level with the opportunity to complete the necessary developmental mathematics and a college-level statistics course in one academic year. The target audience for this pathway is students interested in careers such as allied health and public safety or students planning to transfer to a four-year institution with a non-STEM major in, for example the social sciences or humanities.
Statway will provide the necessary developmental mathematics content, augmented with a focus on a set of core statistical concepts that will be explored in depth to fulfill the requirements of a first course in college-level statistics. Requisite mathematical concepts, skills, and reasoning will be integrated with statistical content and presented using instructional strategies appropriate for adult students.
An initial open-access set of instructional resources will be constructed by the Dana Center in collaboration with faculty at selected institutions. These initial participating institutions will form “collaboratories” – networked improvement communities.
