  1. Who is able to use HCC Student Email?

All HCC students registered in "credit"courses automatically have an e-mail account with the college.

  2. What is my user ID?

The Student ID (W number) that you use to log into Online Registration is also your email login ID.

  3. What if I don't know my Online Registration login ID?

No problem, just visit Account ID Lookup, answer a few questions and your login ID will be provided.

  4. What if I qualify for an account, however, when I look it up, there is no account found?

    There are a couple reasons this may happen;

    • You are not registered in the current semester for a credit course.
    • Your date of birth is not on our system. Since this piece of important information is one that we use to validate you, we are unable to create an account without it. In order to add your date of birth to our system, you can either visit one of the Admission Centers or fax in a copy of your drivers license along with your student id number or social security number to the HCCS Office of the Registrar at 713-718-2111. Please include a note that you need this information updated in the system so that your email account can be activated.
    • If you just registered today for the first time in a credit course, your email account will not be created until 11pm tonight. All accounts are created at this time for students that registered during the day, so please retry your account again after midnight.
  5. How do I access my e-mail account?

Open any web browser such as Netscape, Internet Explorer or Firefox and in the URL box type; http://webmail.hccs.edu

  6. Is one browser better to use than the others?

Yes, Internet Explorer is slightly better but all browsers should work properly.

  7. What is my first time password?

The first time you login, your password is set to your data of birth (mm/dd/yyyy). Once you have logged in successfully, for security reasons, you should change your password to something only you will remember.

  8. How do I change my password after I log in?

CA password management system has been put in place, please go to hccs.edu/pm for more information.

  9. What is my e-mail address?

Your e-mail address is firstname.lastname@student.hccs.edu unless someone already has that address, in which case, a number will be added to the end of your last name.

  10. Why can't I use my e-mail address as my user ID?

We currently use your student ID (W number) as your e-mail login ID to maintain consistency and make it easier for you.

  11. How much space do I have on my account?

Your account has 50 Megabytes of storage.

  12. What happens if I run out of space?

When your account gets close to being full (47MB), you will receive a warning message that your account is almost full and that you should delete unneeded messages. It is critical that you do this immediately because once you reach the 50 megabyte limit, your account will no longer be able to send or receive messages.

  13. What if I have deleted my messages, but I still get a warning message that I am "over quota"?

All deleted messages are sent to the Deleted Items folder. They aren't permanently removed until they're deleted from the Deleted Items folder. This is a safety feature in case you accidentally delete the wrong message; you can always open your Deleted folder and get it back. However, the important thing to remember is that when you delete a message, it stays in your Deleted Folder until you empty that folder.

  14. Can I use this email account when I am off-campus?

Yes, because it is an Internet web mail service, you can use it at anywhere that you have Internet access. Be sure to select the right type of computer when you login; public or private.

  15. What do I do if I need help?

You can access online help inside the Email application by clicking HELP on the top right menu bar. If you still have problems call Customer Support at 713-718-8800.

  16. Is this a secured site?

Yes, this is a secured email site. All communications between your computer and the server are encrypted using Secure Socket Layer (SSL). To verify this, look for the yellow lock on your browser bottom status bar.

  17. How does this email compare to my WebCT email account?

WebCT email is used for course work only and is restricted to usage within that system. HCC Student Email has a broader purpose. It is given to you so that you can communicate with the college and the college can communicate with you. Your HCC email address should be given to all your friends and instructors.
