HCC offers many testing preparation courses.
CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION - CEC 2215
Designed mainly for adults whose primary language is other than English. Focus is on the oral component of the Naturalization Test, based on the 100 Questions and Answers list. Review materials needed for studying for the U.S. naturalization examination. Related topics will include background information, U.S. history and government, the judicial system and U.S. institutions and culture.
GED: LANGUAGE ARTS, READING - CEC 0938
This course is intended for those students who have completed the tenth grade and need a basic review before taking the GED test to acquire a high school diploma. This class is for test review only and not intended as remediation. This course provides students with a skills review of English grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. Students will practice essay construction and apply concepts reviewed in class in preparation for the GED Writing Skills Test. Reading material will be included. Textbook required.
GED LANGUAGE ARTS, READING, SPANISH - CEC 7398
GED MATHEMATICS - CEC 7649
This course is intended for those students who have completed the tenth grade and need a basic review before taking the GED test battery. This class is for test review only and not intended as remediation. This course provides students with a basic math review of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratio, proportions, basic algebra and geometry. Students will practice solving word problems and apply skills reviewed in class to prepare for the GED Mathematics Test. Some review of Science concepts may be included if time permits and based on the needs of the group. Textbook required.

GED: SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE - CEC 7400
This course is intended for those students who have completed the tenth grade and need a basic review before taking the GED test to acquire a high school diploma. This class is for test review only and not intended as remediation. This course provides students with the five basic social studies areas; United States history, world history, civics and government, economics, and geography. It includes the thinking skills with an emphasis on graphics, including “Earth and Space Science,” a new content area. Textbook required.

THEA - MATH CEC - 7652
This course will be an overview of fundamental mathematics, algebra, geometry and basic problem solving to help prepare for the math portion of the THEA test.
THEA - READING AND WRITING - CEC 7653
The reading portion of this course will provide reading skill descriptions: determine the meaning of words and phrases, understand the main idea and supporting details, identify a writer’s purpose, analyze the relationship among ideas in written material, use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material and apply study skills to reading assignments. The writing portion will teach the following characteristics that may be considered in scoring writing samples: appropriateness, unity and focus, development and organization, sentence structure, and usage. Together this course will help prepare for the reading and writing portions of the THEA test.
