Essential Accounting for Physicians

Houston Community College in partnership with Gulf Coast Medical Group Management Association has developed an accounting course specifically for physicians.  This course is designed to meet the needs of physicians in operating their office practice and interpreting financial information important to their financial success.  Students may wish to take this course in a classroom setting or online.    *3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

INSTRUCTOR 
Dr. Mesfin Genanaw received a B.A. degree in Business management from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, in 1983 and an MBA from Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1991.    He has worked in a number of Accounting and management positions at different organizations and taught numerous courses in Accounting, management and instructional technology.   In 1999, he earned his Ed.D. with honors in Higher Education Administration (Minor: Accounting) at Texas Southern University.   Dr. Mesfin Genanaw is professor and Assistant Chair of Accounting at the Houston Community College System.

Statement of owners equity
Cash flow statement in a health care setting 
Observe some distinguishing characteristics of accounting in health care organizations
Discuss the basic principles of capital management
Discuss the benefits of managing cash effectively
Discuss some of the basic principles of financial accounting
Explain an income statement
Explain a statement of owner’s equity
Explain a balance sheet
Discuss accounts receivables and accounts payables  

 

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION 
The Texas Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. *The TMA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  This activity has been designated as ethics and/or professional responsibility education.

 

TARGET AUDIENCE 
This course is designed for medical students, residents and physicians in all specialties who are interested in learning how to interpret financial information in the business world as it relates to their practice.  Office managers, administrators and front staff may also benefit because of their role in the doctors office.
