Houston’s multinational workforce adds to the city’s strength and distinctiveness. However, it can also produce language barriers that result in impediments to safety and productivity and increased employer liability. In response, the Corporate College at HCC developed several multicultural and language assimilation programs.

ESL

ESL courses are designed to teach English to individuals whose primary language is something other than English. The presentation consists of industry-related basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Material is not restricted to Spanish Speakers. Participants of many different languages can benefit from this series of courses.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH

These courses teach Spanish based on current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors specific and relevant to the occupation of the students. These courses are often taken multiple times to improve student proficiency.

SPANISH IN THE WORKPLACE

The Spanish in the Workplace series is designed to teach functional Spanish to facilitate communication between English and Spanish-speaking employees. It covers greetings, introductions, employment issues, scheduling, work rules, safety issues, site supervision, time, speed and quantity expressions. It focuses on language relevant to specific occupations in a highly interactive, situation based classroom. Material can be customized for many occupations including:

HCC is certified as an official registered provider of Command Spanish®, Inc. products.  Command Spanish® is the nation's leading provider of occupational Spanish language and cross-cultural training materials.  Programs are non-grammar based and no previous Spanish experience is necessary.  Students learn generic Spanish terms understood by most Spanish speakers and relevant to their specific type of work.
