Program Description:
A Surgical Technologist, a member of the surgical team in an operating room, assists in delivering patient care before, during and following surgery. Applying the principles of sterile techniques, the Surgical Technology prepares and knows specific uses of equipment, supplies and the numerous instruments required for all types of surgical procedures.
The Surgical Technology Program is for the person who seeks a challenging, diverse and fast-paced health career that offers a vast range of employment opportunities.
The graduate finds employment as a primary scrub person in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, ambulatory care facilities and central supply departments.
Marketing and U.S. government agencies continue predicting a strong demand for the Surgical Technologist.
A graduate can expect an entry-level salary to range between $18,000 and $23,000 annually.

The Surgical Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP), in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Admissions
An applicant must submit a "Health Science Program Application" to the Coleman College of Health Sciences Admissions Office. If no previous enrollment or testing activity has taken place at HCCS, the applicant must also complete an submit an "HCCS Application for Admission" on line at http://saweb.hccs.edu.
All of the items listed below must be completed and on the file with the above-mentioned "Health Science Program Application" no later than August 1 each year in order for the file to be reviewed:
- Official high school transcript or official GED scores.
- College transcript(s).
- Take ASSET placement test given at HCCS. An applicant must have completed all developmental courses that may have been required by the ASSET, provide proof of passing course(s), or proof of passing TASP.
- A foreign transcript, both high school and college, must be evaluated by an approved HCCS evaluation service. Obtaining an evaluation is the responsibility of the applicant, with results of the evaluation attached to the application form. An applicant whose native language is other than English is required to take the CELT.
All complete files will be obtained form the Admissions Office and evaluated by the Surgical Technology Program's Admission Committee.
Applicants Information
An applicant who qualifies for admission is scheduled for a personal interview with a Surgical Technology Program representative. An applicant is selected on a point-based system, which includes grade point average, test scores and the interview (oral and written). Following the interview and evaluation process, the applicant is notified of the results.
