Students earn scholarships to attend HCC Robert Garner Fire Academy
Aug 4, 2016
This fall, the Houston Community College (HCC) Robert Garner Fire Academy will have nine new students thanks to the support of the Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen Scholarship. Many of the scholarship recipients gained their initial exposure to the Fire Technology program through dual credit classes taught by a HCC instructor.
The awardees participated in the C. A. S. E. Y. (Cultivate, Advise, Support, Empower, Youth) Fire Ops program, which creates and fosters career paths to become firefighters and emergency medical technicians. As part of the application process, students were required to complete testing, meet academic requirements, and submit an essay on the topic, “Why I want a career with the Houston Fire Department.” The Houston Fire Department recently held an awards ceremony luncheon for the C.A.S.E.Y. Fire Ops and Donnelly Simms, advisor at HCC accepted the scholarship check on behalf of the college.
At the HCC Robert Garner Fire Academy students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and highly qualified instructors who have many years of experience with the Houston Fire Department and surrounding fire departments throughout greater Houston.
Since 2014, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen has provided scholarships to future HCC students and this year alone, contributions totaled $13,500.
The HCC Robert Garner Fire Academy is a part of the Public Safety and Automotive Center of Excellence and is located on the Northeast Campus, 555 Community College Drive, Houston, Texas 77013. For more information on firefighter training, visit hccs.edu/publicsafety or call 713.718.8300.
