Every day more than 1,000 donations are needed to help save lives in the Texas Gulf Coast region. That is why Houston Community College held blood drives at the West Loop and Stafford campuses to help ensure the area has a healthy blood supply available.

“It’s a selfless act. Not everybody is lucky enough to be healthy. It’s my way of giving back to the community,” HCC Stafford student Ivette Rodriguez said. “I would love to one day work on this coach, a hospital or a clinic helping others.”

Rodriguez hopes to graduate HCC and go into nursing. This is her fourth time donating, and she plans to continue. Rodriguez isn’t the only one who stopped by the donor coaches. Seventeen donors produced 20 units of blood for the region.

“I’ve had family members who have needed blood before, and it saved them,” Fort Bend County community member Lijo Abraham said. “I like doing something good for other people. I might be the one who needs blood in the future. I’m trying to do good to get good back.”

Abraham works in the Fort Bend community and stopped by on his lunch break to give to the cause. He signed up online. Another community member put her name on the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Centers call list and hopes to contribute every two months.

“The first time I did I realized it was so easy,” Shannon Talley said. “I want to donate regularly and summer is perfect because I’m a teacher, and I have time to stop by to come to the aid of those in need.”

These two campuses partner with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center to host blood drives every semester. Over the past year, HCC has seen donation numbers grow and incorporate diverse ethnic backgrounds, which is good for the blood supply.

“When we come to a school like this, we love it because we can get different blood types that we don’t see as often,” Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Recruitment Coordinator Patricia LeBlanc said. “For example, the B type is sought after. It’s rare, and we get more of that blood type on this campus.”

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center serves more than 170 hospitals and health care institutions in the 26-county Texas Gulf Coast, Brazos Valley and East Texas regions. Thanks to  HCC students, staff and community for donating a pint of blood to help save lives.
