About OISS&SA

The Houston Community College Office of International Student Services & Study Abroad (OISS&SA) provides information and programs to F-1 international students about the campuses and community and provides support and assistance concerning F-1 visas and related F-1 immigration issues.

Note: An international student under the age of 18 who wishes to gain admission to HCC must provide documentation to prove that he/she has achieved the equivalency of a U.S. high school diploma in his/her country by submitting a transcript evaluation along with their application to OISS&SA. Submit a copy of the passport (biometric page only)

Step 4: Financial Documentation

Submit Original Financial Documentation: These documents (1-4) will not be returned. Students must be prepared to submit a second original set to the U.S. Embassy at the time of the visa interview. Requirements for Financial Documents

Step 5: Application Fee

Submit a non-refundable application fee of $75.  You must have completed the online application (step 1) before you can make a payment online. International students online payment tutorial

You must print the receipt at the end of the transaction and submit it as proof of payment with your application.  

Note: The payment term and entrance term may vary when paying the fee. This is not a problem. The fee must just be paid before you are accepted to the school by OISS&SA. Alternatively, money orders payable to Houston Community College can be mailed to OISS&SA or submitted in person at the HCC cashier office.

  • Fall Semester:  July 1
  • Spring Semester:  November 18
  • Summer Semester:  April 1

Apply to HCC: International Transfer Students

Step 1: Complete online application

Step 3: Submit previous SEVIS I-20's

Submit a copy of all previous SEVIS Form I-20s.

Step 4: Submit passport copy

Submit a copy of your passport, visa and I-94 Departure Record (front and back) (you may also print out your I-94 at www.cbp.gov/i94).

Step 5: Submit financial documentation

In compliance with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Federal Codes and Regulations, and the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS); Houston Community College (HCC) requires proof of adequate financial support from each student applicant who requests a SEVIS Form I-20. The financial information of a student must be complete and on file with the Office of International Student Services (OISS) prior to release of the SEVIS Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility).  Submit original financial documents (These documents will not be returned).

Types of Sponsors:

Self-Sponsoring

Bank Letter. (original) The bank letter must validate at least $22, 980 USD (plus $4,400 USD for each F-2 dependent). In addition, the bank letter must be on bank letterhead and signed by a bank official that certifies the sponsor’s name, date the account was opened, average balance, and affirmation that deposits have been made over the last year. If your financial sponsor is a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or lawfully residing in the US.

If your financial sponsor is a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or lawfully residing in the US

  • A completed Affidavit of Support (I-134) (original).  This is for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and individuals lawfully residing in the US only. It should be completely filled out and signed by the person who will financially sponsor the F-1 student.
  • Bank Statements. (original) The bank statement must validate an average balance of $5,000 ((plus $4,400 USD for each F-2 dependent). The bank statements must be from a current account and should include the financial sponsors’ full name, account number and beginning and ending balance. Submit last three months of statements.
  • And one of the following:
    • 1. Employment Letter. (original) A statement from an employer on company letterhead and signed by a supervisor that certifies the financial sponsor’s name, date of hire, job title, and salary. The Employment Letter cannot be older than six months from the date the student submits the HCC SEVIS I-20 Application and all additional supporting documents for F-1 sponsorship to OISS.
    • 2. If self-employed provide a copy of the most recent U.S. Income Tax Return Statement along with a bank statement that meets the above bank statement requirements.

Non U.S. citizen financial sponsor (not residing in the US)

  • A completed (original) Affidavit of Financial Support (International)
  • And one of the following:
    • a. Bank Letter (original). The bank letter must validate at least $22, 980 USD (plus $4,400 USD for each F-2 dependent). The bank letter must be on bank letterhead and signed by a bank official that certifies the financial sponsor’s name, date the account was opened, average balance, and affirmation that deposits have been made over the last three months.
    • b. Bank Statements (original). The bank statements must validate at least $22,980 USD (plus $4,400 USD for each F-2 dependent). The bank statements must be from a current account and should include the financial sponsors’ full name, account number, beginning and ending balances. The financial sponsor needs to provide three months of statements from the date the student submits the HCC SEVIS I-20 Application Form and all additional supporting documents for F-1 sponsorship to OISS.

Government Agency or Company Sponsor

  • An official sponsorship letter (original) designated for attendance at Houston Community College.

Step 6: Submit F-1 International Student Transfer-in form

Submit the F-1 International Student Transfer-in form to your current school Designated School Official (International Student Advisor).

Step 7: Submit application fee

Submit a non-refundable application fee of $75. You must have completed the online application (step 1) before you can make a payment online.

Step 8: Submit orientation fee

Submit a non-refundable application fee of $50.  You must have completed the online application (step 1) before you can make a payment online. I

Transfer Student Deadlines

The OISS&SA must receive your application on or before: 

  • Fall Semester:  July 15
  • Spring Semester:  December 6
  • Summer Semester:  May 1

 

Note: the OISS&SA will continue to accept fall 2014 transfer students until September 12, 2014 if the following requirements are met.

  • Student must submit complete tranfer application
  • Student must be enrolled full time (12 SCH) and tuition has been paid

Application: Defer attendence, Concurrent enrollment, Change of status

Defer attendance

If you are unable to obtain the F-1 student visa, or, for any other reason, are unable to report on time for the semester you initially applied for and wish to defer your attendance to the next available semester, you must submit a deferred attendance request in order to process a new SEVIS Form I-20 for the next term.

1. Complete the Deferment Request

2. Submit a deferment fee of U.S. $50.00

Note:  The preferred payment method is an online payment using a credit card.

Students must print the receipt at the end of the transaction and submit it as proof of payment with your application.

Alternatively, money orders payable to Houston Community College can be mailed to OISS&SA or submitted in person at the HCC cashiers office on campus.

3. Submit proof of financial support. If the financial documents already on record with HCC were issued less than six months ago, no new financial documentation is required. Otherwise, the deferred attendance request must be submitted with new financial documents. Note:  These documents will not be returned. Therefore, the student must be prepared to submit a second original set to the U.S. Embassy at the time of the visa interview.

 

Concurrent enrollment

If you are an F-1 student with an I-20 from another school and would like to take a few courses at HCC, follow these steps to enroll as a concurrent student:

**NOTE: Due to their authorization requirements, HCC is not able to accept Distance Education (fully online courses) students from the following states: Arkansas, District of Columbia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Step 1: Complete HCC online application to obtain your HCC ID number.

Step 2: Submit a Concurrent Enrollment letter, each semester from your primary/host college/university to the Office of International Student Services (OISS&SA) to register for classes at HCC. Write your HCC ID on the letter and turn it in to the OISS&SA in person or by fax (713) 718-1221 or mail to:

Step 3: Submit proof of meningitis vaccine at a campus, fax, mail or email to vaccine@hccs.edu .  The system will not allow you to enroll in classes until your proof of vaccination has been processed

Step 4: Submit official transcript to student records department of HCC

Step 6: Print schedule for your records & attend classes

Change of status

International students who are currently in the United States and want to change their non-immigrant status (for example from F-2 to F-1) may do so by appointment only, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

You are asked to call the OISS&SA office to make an appointment.
