 How to apply

The first step in applying for any financial aid at HCC, including grants, loans, scholarships and work study, is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). If you are a first-time borrower at HCC, you will be required to:

  1. Accept or decline the loans offered to you based on your eligibility.
  2. Complete Federal Direct Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling, which explains your rights and responsibilities as a loan borrower.
  3. Complete your Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) using your federal PIN.
These steps must be completed before you can receive your first loan disbursement. Stafford borrowers will not receive their loan disbursement until 30 calendar daysafter the student has been attending 6 credits or more.

Reminder: All loan paperwork [Revision Requests, Master Promissory Note, and Loan Entrance Counseling] must be completed before loans can be processed. **

**Important: Funding from student loans may be available to purchase books in the bookstore beginning on the second day of classes if the student is enrolled and attending 6 or more credits and has completed all loan requirements. Students whose loan funds have been authorized for books will receive an email letting them know the funds are available to purchase books at the HCC bookstore.
Deadline for completing loan requirements: Student loan requirements must be completed approximately 30 days prior to the end of the semester in order to receive loans funds for the semester. Actual deadline dates will be posted to the main page of the financial aid web site. Student loan requirements include accepting a loan offer, requesting a loan revision (increase or decrease), completing the online Entrance Loan Counseling, and completing the online Master Promissory Note.

Information for exiting Stafford borrowers: If you are graduating, withdrawing, or dropping below half-time, complete Federal Direct Stafford Loan Exit Counseling. HCC will receive the results the next business day. Your academic records will be on hold until this is completed.
