The road to recovery has been a long one for Houstonian and U.S. Navy veteran, John Gay. In 2012, the Vietnam veteran found himself homeless, bankrupt and abandoned. Thanks to Gay’s determination, coupled with the Houston Community College Foundation and its Veteran’s Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), one of Houston’s heroes is on his way to previously unimagined success.

As construction gears up on major bond construction projects, Houston Community College (HCC) and Jacobs Program Management Co. have set the date for their next small business enterprise (SBE) networking event. The event takes place at the HCC West Loop Center from 8:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m., Friday, July 11.

Houston Community College Southwest and Houston Independent School District are teaming up with a common goal – to identify at-risk students who are disengaged and disconnected from their comprehensive high school and help them stay in school to earn their high school diploma. The partnership allows for these at-risk students to not only secure high school degrees but seamlessly transition to higher education.

HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences is offering a new program for careers as a medical scribe. Scribes are trained as medical information managers who specialize in charting physician-patient encounters in real-time. Medical Scribes interact and collaborate with other members of the health care team, but serve as the right hand to the physician. Similar to the medical transcriptionist, the medical scribe provides another career pathway or stepping stone to the health care system.
