District IV Highlights: Nursing program awarded $700,000 grant

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has awarded a $700,000 grant to the HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences Nursing program. The funds from this grant will be specifically targeted toward four primary goals to help meet the continuing shortage of registered nurses in the state of Texas.

Houston Community College is celebrating Black History Month with two memorable events, both featuring civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton. Sharpton is the keynote speaker at HCC’s 2014 Black History Scholarship Gala and will speak to local middle-school, high-school and college students earlier that day.

District IV Community Connections: New addition to Coleman College for Health Sciences

Houston Community College’s Coleman College for Health Sciences will soon add to the growing educational opportunities in the healthcare fields in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Plans for a new state-of-the-art educational building, which will be located on 1.25 acres across the street from the existing John B. Coleman building at 1900 Pressler Street, are progressing with an anticipated completion date in early 2017.

HCC is working with local school districts, including the Alief Independent School District, to develop college prep courses in math and English. The goal of these classes is to help students prepare for college-level work and to prevent students from having to take developmental courses in either subject.

What an exciting year it's been for the HCC Stafford TV studio and head of production, Don Wells, and his staff. HCC Southwest, in a partnership with Rice University and the University of Texas, has helped refurbish the .8 meter (30-inch) research telescope at McDonald Observatory in West Texas. In November, HCC Southwest faculty, including Don Wells and co-principle investigator for the project, Juan-Carlos Reina, travelled to the McDonald Observatory to train on the revamped telescope.
