Program Information

A Career in Dental Hygiene

The Dental Hygiene program is an Applied Science Degree program at Coleman College. The student will graduate after two years of four semesters and one summer term.

The profession of Dental Hygiene functions in close alliance with the profession of dentistry. Working with dentists, dental hygienists provide services to assist patients in obtaining knowledge and individualized care to meet their oral care needs.

The Dental Hygiene program at Coleman College strives to ensure an environment which supports student learning. In order to facilitate the learning process, the program is committed to seeking and improving instructional strategies. Students play a role in the educational process and are encouraged to be self-directed in their learning and to establish high standards of professional and personal excellence. In addition, the program strives to develop oral health care professionals who function as effective health care providers in a dynamic society. Dental Hygienist beginning salaries usually range upward from $28 to $34 per hour.

 

Accreditation Information

The program in dental hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation [and has been granted the accreditation status of “approval without reporting requirements”]. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. HESI Information

HESI Testing at HCC Coleman Campus:

  • Create an online student account at evolve.elsevier.com, and keep your login credentials secure to take the test. 
  • Contact HCC Coleman College Testing Center for a testing appointment on 713.718.5170 or via email: coleman.testing@hccs.edu
  • Before take the test, you must make the payment of $75.00, to the Business Office at HCC Coleman, 1900 Pressler Street.
  • Location of Testing: 1st Floor,  John B. Coleman Building,  1900 Pressler Street, Suite #158

 

Dental Hygiene Clinic

HCC Coleman Student Dental Hygiene Clinic offers dental services to the public. Treatments include exams, oral cancer screenings, cleanings, x-rays, sealants and fluoride treatments. Students are directly supervised by faculty and dentists.

Appointments can last up to 3 hours due to grading by dentists and faculty. Multiple visits may be required to complete treatment depending on each patients dental needs.

If you are unable to make your appointment, please contact the clinic within 48 hours of your appointment time to cancel or reschedule.

Supervision of minors (small children) is mandated by HCC and children under the age of 18 are not allowed in the treatment area unless they are patients themselves.

Food and drink are not allowed in the clinic.

Please have your cell phone on silent while inside the clinic.

Location

The clinic is located on the 5th floor of the HCC Coleman College building. After you exit the elevators, turn right at the stair case and then turn right again. Walk to the end of the hallway past the restrooms and turn left. The clinic is halfway down the hall on the right hand side.

 There is a flat rate parking garage located 2 blocks from HCC Coleman College. It is $6 for all-day parking.

Licensure/Certification Exam Results

The Dental Hygiene program graduates licensures/certifications are issued by Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.

Licensure exams are administered through The Central Regional Dental Testing Service, Inc. (CRDTS).
