To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, The Printing Museum presents Postcards from the Trenches: Germans and Americans Visualize the Great War. The exhibition focuses on the art created by soldiers, demonstrating how individuals from opposing sides of the conflict personalized and humanized the war experience. Seventy-five hand-painted postcards by German painter, Otto Schubert, serve as a focal point of the exhibition and depict the daily realities and tragedies of the war. Brief, hand-written statements are relegated to the thinnest of margins, essentially serving as borders or frames for his imagery, while alluding to the highly censored political climate in Germany. These hand-painted postcards are situated amongst other sketches, ink drawings, and graphic works made by German and American soldiers, and are juxtaposed with mass-produced postcards, printed posters, and other government propaganda, further demonstrating how postcards were the social media of the times. Curated by Dr. Irene Guenther, History Professor in the Honors College, University of Houston, and Dr. Marion Deshmukh, Professor of History and Art History at George Mason University, the exhibition consists of loans from the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and works from several private lenders across the country.

The Printing Museum, founded in 1979, is one of only four printing museums in the country. The museum’s mission is to preserve and promote the history, technology, and art of printing. Through its permanent collection of historical documents, fine art prints, and antique printing equipment, The Printing Museum narrates the story of printed communication and the ways in which printing technologies have transformed lives. In addition, the museum maintains three gallery spaces devoted to temporary exhibitions and four working studios dedicated to book arts and fine art printing.
Major support for The Printing Museum operations and programming is provided by the Houston Endowment, Inc., The Wortham Foundation, Inc., The Brown Foundation, Inc., and Mid-America Arts Alliance.
