Food Scholarship

Food Scholarship in Partnership with Houston Food Bank

Work, food, bills, school and family obligations are the ultimate juggling act as a student. We know that some of our students make difficult choices to stay in school—taking classes instead of overtime at work, eating Ramen Noodles to stretch their budgets, cutting back workhours and paying for childcare.

But what if you had on-campus tools and resources to help you worry about money less and focus on school more?

That’s what the HCC Food Scholarship is designed to do. HCC Financial Coaches and The Houston Food Bank's Food For Change Initiative joined forces for a pilot program that will offer 1,000 students food scholarships.

As a recipient of the food scholarship, you get access to a mobile food pantry that will deliver food twice a month to HCC's Northline and South campuses.

At the bimonthly food distributions, you can have free access to 60 pounds of produce, meat and other non-perishables food at no cost to you. The food is considered as a monthly scholarship.

By clicking the blue button below, you can fill out the opt-in form for the HCC Food Scholarship. After opting-in, you can start attending food distributions. For questions, please feel free to email hcc.foodbank@hccs.edu. Someone will respond in less than 24 hours.

Food Distributions - What You Need to Know

Number of Distributions You Can Attend

You can attend up to two food distributions per month. At each distribution, you can get up to 60 pounds of FREE GROCERIES. The groceries available will include seasonal produce; frozen meat; dry goods; and some canned goods. The actual items you will receive each time will depend on availability (this means you will likely not get the exact same products each time you attend). Examples of food: carrots, grapefruit, frozen chicken, canned tuna, sliced whole grain bread and almond milk.

What to Bring to Distributions

  1. You will use your HCC ID to receive your groceries either at the HCC Northline Campus or the HCC South campus.
  2. Please bring something to carry your groceries (bag, boxes or containers).

Back-up Shoppers When You Can't Come

We know that there will be times when you need the food, but can't make it to the distribution because of work or class. That is why you can have one back-up shopper who can pick up the food for you.

There are two ways to get a back-up shopper approved.

  1. Email hcc.foodbank@hccs.edu to notify financial coaches at least 48 hours before a distribution.
  2. Give the name of your back-up shopper at your first distribution or orientation.

How Long Do You Get the Food

The full 2018 Spring semester schedule is available above.

You will also have access to food distributions this summer and next Fall. More details about those schedules will be released at a later date.

NOTE ABOUT ELIGIBILITY: You are eligible for a food scholarship for as long as you remain enrolled. After transferring or graduation from HCC, students are eligible for up to one year following transfer or graduation, as long as the program is still operating. Enrollment is not required during summers to receive the food scholarship. If you return to HCC following a period of non-enrollment in the fall or spring, you may resume receiving the food scholarship as long as the program is still operating.

Food Assistance for Students Not Selected for Food Scholarship

We know that some of our students make difficult choices to stay in our programs—taking classes instead of overtime at work, cutting back workhours, paying for childcare. Houston Community College and The Houston Food Bank joined forces for this pilot program to offer 1,000 students (selected through an unbiased, randomized lottery process) food scholarships.

If you were not selected for the food scholarship and need food assistance, our Financial Coaches can help connect you with resources. Please email hcc.foodbank@hccs.edu to learn what assistance is available.

The Food Scholarship is a way for you to receive FREE groceries while you work towards your goals here at HCC. This is a new pilot program for only a select group of Northeast and Central students.

In short, having help with food costs can free close to $300 a month in your budget! As a recipient of the food scholarship, you can attend up to 2 food distributions per month. At each of the distributions, you can receive up to 60 pounds of free groceries from the Houston Food Bank.

Twice a month at Northline and South campuses, you can have access to 60 pounds of food. Yes, you read right. You can have access to 60 pounds of produce, meat and other non-perishables food at no cost to you. The food is considered as a monthly scholarship.

We know that some of our students make difficult choices to stay in our programs—taking classes instead of overtime at work, cutting back workhours, paying for childcare — so we have found another way to support you. The groceries are meant to make it easier for you to participate in your program by reducing financial burden and stretching your grocery budget.

Houston Community College and The Houston Food Bank joined forces for a pilot program to offer 1,000 students (selected through an unbiased, randomized lottery process) food scholarships that provide access to a mobile Food Pantry that will deliver food at Northline and South campuses.

There is not a catch. It is our hope that the assistance will help you with your financial responsibilities, so that you can focus on school more.

If you take full advantage of the food distributions, you can catch:

  • Up on sleep or homework because you don't have to pick up the extra shift.
  • Up on a bill with the extra money in your budget.
