I am currently a histology technician at Texas Children's Hospital. I work in a specialized histology laboratory, performing manual histochemical tests on specimens.
Why did you choose HCC Coleman College?
I chose HCC Coleman College after learning of the many career paths in healthcare. HCC Coleman offered support and a path for me to take to start my healthcare journey.
Why did you choose your program of study?
I am a visual person and analytical problem solver who likes puzzles. Histology combines the science of biology (with tissue specimens) and the art of laboratory skills to make slides.
Histology allows me to combine my love of science and art while helping people in a healthcare setting.
What did you like best about your college experience?
What I liked best about my college experience was the support that HCC offers their students.
The Histologic Technician professor, Dr. Min, is very kind and patient, and she is available to help when a student needs more assistance. My peers and the other students from other programs were also a big encouragement, and we all supported each other to succeed.
What did you like best about your program of study?
I enjoyed how the study involves a lot of expertise and techniques that combine science with the art and visuals of histo technology. Histology is very hands-on work, which I enjoy.
It is nice working in a laboratory setting where you are like a scientist and an artist.
When you were tired, what motivated you to push forward?
I worked part-time during my time in the program. What motivated me was my future career and a desire help others.
What advice can you offer to help other students succeed?
Always be curious, and never stop asking questions!
Also, we all need support during our journey. Always know that you are not alone in your studies or field, so reach out to your classmates and your professors!
Remember that your hard work is worth it in the end.
How did your education change or improve your life?
I work at Texas Children's Hospital, a place where I was once a patient. Helping others, especially children, runs in my family, so this allows me to give back to the community through patient care.
My education has allowed me to have a fulfilling career.
